Facing The Giants (2006) Reveiw

Shiloh Christian Academy is well-known, but its football team leaves much to be desired. Head Coach Grant Taylor has not had a single winning season for six years. When one of the best players from a rival school decides to transfer over, it’s obvious that next season will just be more of the same disappointment. Some supporters of the team are not happy with this and begin trying to go behind the coach's back to force him out without his knowledge. This creates a lot of additional stress for Taylor, who was already struggling with his mental health. To make things worse, he also has a broken-down car, is forced to live in an unsanitary home, and he and his wife are starting to believe they will never become parents.
What Coach and his team do not know is that the post season will be a match against the state's most daunting team the undefeated Giants, known as the football bullies of the state. They are lead by one of the weirdest coaches to ever set foot on a football field. He notoriously chews through rival football teams like sugar cane while simultaneously having a sweet obsession for lollipops. Facing the Giants is more than just an underdog story, it’s about battling faith against disbelief along with emphasizing why working towards God’s plan is important.
Positive Elements
Recognizing all positive around Facing The Giants can be difficult and to be honest quite odd . To try put my thoughts into order I have come up with two key points that stand out most in my head coach Taylor leadership motto served as a lightbulb moment for properly running his program and was shocked to hear him inform the team “Our goal is not to win games, its to honor god” which gave me some hypotonic relief . we all know how desperate this neglected team has been feeling previously. It warmed my heart when he decides to focus on helping a team captain who suffers from strong doses of bleaker impressions so they can succeed more in life.
A different player that the coach looks into is a person with problems with his father. As to help, Taylor suggests parenting should always be respected even when they seem misguided. The child resolves the conflicts and learns how to repair relationships with his parents. A different dad, who happens to have quite debilitating injuries himself, does what he can to put to action being a strong role model for his timid son by trying and working through countless obstacles. So, as Shiloh Academy students participate in sports, they also learn how to transform from a bunch of bickering kids into an actual cohesive team. Just like the other kids and their caregivers, their parents are role models for them. This happens to be an assistant coach who tries to get back at his employer by making the most out of the position in question. Some of the team boosters understand that through these despicable actions, they have also contributed to the embarrassing moments commemorated with Coach Taylor – and one of them goes apologizing for this injury.
The very supportive couple gets us all encouraged: Taylor and Brooke are happily married with three children and always tell each other it’s okay to put themselves first during hard times which motivates them even more without sacrificing much needed me time.
The conflict in Coach Taylor’s life is ongoing. It stems from what he views as a calling from God to fulfill certain obligations in his life: his family, and the football team. He participates in Bible reading and talks with God, where he prays with Brooke. While praying with her, he keeps asking if she’s willing to love him if the answer will be no to their desperate prayer of wanting a child. In one of Brook's breaking points, she lovingly says God can do whatever he wants but surrenders her needs. For the Coach’s part saying helps clarify his viewpoint: “I am all set to give to God every bit of effort I can,, and in return I will allow him to determine the outcome.”
Brooke now loves the Lord and walks charitably down unpopulated hallways praying for school children. This describes “spiritual lift” which pertains to one of the important concepts within the film which is about trusting God's provision. The movie argues how trusting God's provision must be matched with giving one's best effort. This reminds me of a story about two farmers that pray for rain; As one waits for the rain full of hope like one farmer, his partner prepares actively while expecting it.
Conversely a farmer is patiently “waiting for the rain while he is also preparing his fields.” Whom do you think trusts God more? As far as I can tell, this example proves my point.
With a little bit of hard work, it doesn’t take long until the coach is known throughout the whole school and a revival spreads.
On the other hand we have got students as well as teachers who are scattered around campus and are grouped in deep prayers. By making peace with his father, that character for some reason sails through forgiving himself first along with God. He tells his father, “I want to let you know that I was right with God today. So now I want to say sorry and affirm your title.” Together they form one united prayer before every match.
